THE OILFIELD TRADESWOMAN
I AM RETIRED NOW!!!! YEHAWWWWWWW!!! I have, most of my life held a nontraditional job. Belly dancing is a passion and a lovable hobby that I have just now been able to take to another level. In the 1970’s when I first fell in love with belly dance, I would dance in the wheel wells of planes and in the refinery oil fields while doing my work:-), I was working at Douglas Aircraft from 1968 to 1972 (which is now Boeing Aircraft) bucking rivets, or soldering and splicing wires on the military planes at night. In 1977 I went to Mobil Oil Refinery, (which is now ExxonMobil Oil |

Refinery) I started out as a laborer, and in the last 29 years, have worked my way up to one of the very few female vibration analyst, that I know of in the United States. I have worked some interesting jobs. I have broken concrete with a jackhammer, climbed the tanks that you see from the streets and worked on the valves and control regulators that are on top of the tanks, or vessels.
Then I was responsible for monitoring and diagnosing the behavior of critical equipment in the refinery, such as pumps, compressors, turbines, and blowers, and those big fans that you can see from the street, if you look up. They look like giant bowls. I’ve worked at ExxonMobil for over 28 years now, and even though it was very challenging at times, I am very proud to work there. It has enabled me to live a decent life, and the learning experiences throughout the years are always increasing. My coworkers are tradesmen, such as pipe fitters, electricians, boilermakers, insulators, instrument techs, and 40 other machinists. I am the only female machinist at present. My title is Machinist/Machinery Vibration Analyst, Category III. I am certified with the Vibration Institute of America. I don’t know many women that can go to any plant that has moving equipment and diagnose the vibration problems. So needless to say I am very proud of my ability to diagnose machinery vibration problems.
I’ve lifted 80-pound compressor valves, 100-pound bags of soda ash for the first 10 years. My job is very interesting, important and challenging, and as my sister/dancer friend Jessica says, “a great job that pays for my expensive belly dancing habit” I am retired as of "New Years Eve 2005"!!!! WHO HOO!!! Now! to pursue my belly dancing activities, writing rituals and poems, and also my new Power Goddess Serpentinology~ Jewelry line that is in development right now.”
